Firefighters were called to tackle a chemical spillage at a Braintree firm.
An industrial accident led to between 200 and 400 litres of hydrochloric acid being spilled over a forecourt at Braintree Electro Platers in Springwood Drive.
Some of the 28 per cent strength acid, used for cleaning rust from metal, then seeped into nearby storm drains.
The acid was classed as low risk by sub-officer Derek Leathean, who attended the scene yesterday.
Firefighters were called at 12.17pm and pumped large amounts of water into the storm drains to dilute it.
Manager Alan Joyce said nobody had been hurt in the accident.
He said the spillage had occurred when a drum was lifted from a lorry by a forklift truck.
