The blaze, which ripped through 25 per cent of John Carr works, in Boars Tye Road, took 20 firefighters more than two hours to control.

The fire in the disused joinery led to parts of Silver End experiencing a power cut during Wednesday evening.

Witham station officer Terry Hutton said: "It caused extensive damage to the office area."

No-one was hurt at the scene but the blaze is being treated as of suspicious origin.
