A woman whose husband died from deep vein thrombosis just one day after being discharged from Basildon Hospital has won £140,000 compensation.
Julie Guest, of Arun, East Tilbury, was widowed after her husband Mark died on September 10 2000 following a hospital diagnosis of a soft ankle sprain the previous day.
Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust agreed to settle the family's claim for £140,000 on the third day at her case at London's High Court.
The trust admitted doctors failed to consider a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) - the formation of a blood clot in one of the deep veins - or pulmonary embolism (PE)- a clogged blood vessel.
Barrister for the trust, Angus Moon expressed "deep regret" for the bank clerk's death. But the hospital did not admit liability disputing whether Mr Guest would have died anyway had DVT or PE been initially diagnosed.
