Claims that convicted mass murderer Jeremy Bamber is innocent have been debated by MPs.

A 30-minute adjournment debate on the killer's bid to launch a further appeal was held at the House of Commons, yesterday.

Basingstoke MP Andrew Hunter, one of Bamber's supporters, told Parliamentary colleagues he had "grave concerns" over police evidence submitted at the 43-year-old's trial for murdering five members of his family at White House Farm, Tolleshunt D'Arcy, in 1985.

Referring to claims police saw someone alive in the house when they arrived at the scene of the killings, Mr Hunter said: "Developments in particular during the last 12 months have given rise to grave concern that Bamber's conviction may be another of the great miscarriages of justice of the 1980s, to be bracketed with the Birmingham Six, the Guildford Four and others."

He criticised Essex Police, claiming they had failed to disclose documents requested by Bamber's lawyers under the Freedom of Information Act, and called for a Home Office inquiry.
