A controversial planning application to develop the site of an old building in an established area of Braintree has been approved.
Emotions were running high at Braintree area committee as Bocking residents gathered to object to the conversion of a former council depot into nine cottages.
Permission was also given to build a new cottage on land behind Bradford Street overlooking Friars Lane.
Developers have been interested in the existing building, known as The Maltings, for some time.
Councillors said they felt development would be the best thing for the area.
