Fire crews had to cut an elderly woman driver from her car after a crash in South Woodham Ferrers.
The 81-year-old was knocked unconscious and her car ended up in a ditch, following a collision with another car, at the junction of Burnham Road near Stow Marney, just before midday.
Fire crews, under guidance from the ambulance crew, carefully removed the roof of the car to enable ambulance staff to treat the woman and her 84-year-old husband, who are both from Burnham.
Both were taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.
The driver of the other car, which spun round in the road on impact, a woman estimated to be in her 30s or 40s was uninjured and did not need to go to hospital.
A consultant anaesthetist who was passing stopped to offer assistance to the two ambulance crews at the scene.
