Daniel Hurley, of Clacton, bought his daughter Sarah the ice cream as a treat from the drive-through McDonalds restaurant in Weeley.
Mr Hurley said: "I turned around and was horrified to find there were metal strips in the ice cream - one was about an inch long. She said there was another couple of bits there and she was picking them out.
"I was horrified," he said.
Mr Hurley took it back to the restaurant and spoke to the manager. "He was apologetic. He was astonished and couldn't believe it himself," he said.
A spokeswoman for McDonalds said: "We are aware of the Hurley family's complaint and are very concerned to hear of their experiences.
"Our customer services department are liaising directly with the family and will continue to do so until the matter has been resolved. While we are confident of our health and safety procedures, an investigation has already begun."
