Pupils at St Mary's Primary School had "tremendous fun" charging about with pretend pancakes as staff prepared the real thing for them to eat.

Headteacher David Brace said the day, to raise money for the Asian tsunami disaster, was a huge success.

The children paid to take part in the races.

The school raised £200 for the tsunami appeal. Mr Brace wished to thank all involved in making the day a success.

It was pancakes a plenty at Asda when staff took on soldiers in a variety of fun challenges to raise money for charity.

The proceeds for the Shrove Tuesday event at the store, in Turner Rise, Colchester, will go to helping people with celebral palsy.

A group of seven staff and the same number of soldiers from the 13 Air Assault Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps, from Colchester barracks took part. Each team competed in pancake races in the store as shoppers watched.
