A penalty shoot-out organised by Thames Park Youth FC will boost cancer charities by more than £4,000.

The under-15 Southend Junior League side staged the event after the mother-in-law of club treasurer Kevin Cock passed away from the disease in August.

They were also inspired by club secretary Vivian Brock, who is currently battling breast cancer.

Three other teams joined Thames Park in the event at Priory Park, Prittlewell -Rocket Girls U12, plus Trinity U10 and U8s.

Between the nerve jangling penalty competitions the youngsters received expert football coaching from Southend United's Football in the Community team.

Club winners: Thames Park, Gary Tidd; Rocket Girls, Emma Farrow; Trinity U10, Sam Irvine and Trinity U8, Taylor.

All money raised, which includes a £525 auction donation from Southend's Cricketers pub, will be split between the Elizabeth Lowry cancer ward and Nightingale breast cancer unit at the town's hospital.
