Market traders are facing a 30 per cent rent hike from Colchester Council as it tries to break even.
The cost of an average-sized pitch in the town centre is set to increase from £8.60 a day to more than £11. Street traders are also looking at a 30 per cent increase to more than £9.50 to cover a £10,000 council cash shortfall.
The council said it needs to stem losses at the market. Spokesman Dave McManus said: "It might seem like a high increase, but in terms of the actual charge, it isn't.
"Some market traders have prime retail positions. We have to look at that and the break-even position."
