Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dean Marney has been selected for the England U21 squad.

The Canvey-based youngster has impressed for the Premiership side in recent weeks - scoring twice in nine games - and has now made Peter Taylor's line up for the forthcoming friendly at Pride Park against Holland on Tuesday, February 8.

Former Southend boss Taylor said: "Dean has done well since breaking into the first team at White Hart Lane.

"He is a very versatile player who can play in a number of positions on the right hand side.

"Dean could do a job for us on the right-wing, as a full-back or a wing-back, which gives us more options.

"It is too early to say whether he will play yet, but I have had very good reports from my scouts who have seen him play for Spurs.

"I have never met the lad myself, but, funnily enough, my brother Frank lives next to door to one of his relations in Rochford, which goes to show what a small world it is."

Marney was part of the Spurs squad which lost 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers in midweek, but did not get off the bench.
