Matthew Luetchford, 32, was digging a ditch as part of underpinning work in Priory Street when he made the discovery.
He said: "The first bit looked like a thigh bone and there were other fragments with what looked like a knuckle joint and a bit of pelvis.
"Because of the depth they were at, I figured they were pretty old."
Mr Luetchford, of Ipswich, who works for Rust and Kemp, said: "We phoned our boss who called the engineers and they phoned the police.
"Once they had been notified, they had to come up and have a look to see if it was anything suspicious. As soon as they saw the depth, I think they knew there was nothing dodgy but they have to follow procedure."
Acting Det Sgt Mike Sheeran, of Colchester CID, said scenes of crime officers went to the scene but the find was not being treated as suspicious.
