Chris Hatt, 28, of Tortoiseshell Way, Braintree, bought a warm chicken salad from the KFC at Galleys Corner and had munched three-quarters of his lunch before finding the moth.
He filled in a complaint form and has just heard from the head office who offered him vouchers for two free salads as compensation.
Mr Hatt said: "I feel completely insulted by what they have offered me. I feel like they are taking liberties."
A spokesman for KFC said: "Like many supermarkets and other retailers, our salad arrives fresh, pre-washed and packed direct from a supplier.
"On this occasion, it seems a small moth was not removed in the cleaning process. While we find this unacceptable, it poses no health risk whatsoever. We have instructed our suppliers to re-check all of their quality processes.
"In addition, as a gesture of goodwill, we have offered Mr Hatt a refund equivalent to double the cost of his purchase along with our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused."
