Wickford Angling Centre squad member Frank Thomas had more than 5lb to spare when he took the top weight at Sunday's Gloucester Park Open.
His 28lb 10oz 8dr roach and chub haul rewarded him with the £100 prize on a day when big roach dominated the catches.
In fact the top eight anglers only weighed in a single carp between them, Thomas fished the cockle bank where he included a single chub in his otherwise all roach haul.
Pole and caster kept a procession of quality roach coming to his net, with the only lull in the proceedings occurring immediately after he had lost a good chub.
Fellow Wickford Angling Centre man Peter Steward took second place with an all roach 23lb 3oz 8dr haul.
He fished the bear pit swim to take roach throughout the match on pole and caster.
Del Smee claimed third place with a 22lb 13oz haul.
