A football club has been dealt a severe blow after its proposals for a new £2 million sports facility were rejected.
At Braintree Council's Witham area committee last night, councillors voted to reject Hatfield Peverel Football Club's plans to build a new clubhouse, pavillion, indoor sports hall and changing rooms, along with pitch lighting and an all-weather pitch on land off Wickham Bishops Road.
The decision had been deferred from the last area committee meeting in January.
At last night's meeting, councillors objected on planning policy grounds as well as issues in the proposal relating to pedestrian access and floodlighting.
Councillors did agree to support the club's objective to improve facilities and suggested that further consideration should be given to the scale of the overall development including the size of the buildings, degree and requirements for floodlighting and means of access to the site to provide a basis for further discussions in the future.
