A fuel tank burst into flames as it was being cut in half ready to be taken away.
The 12,000 gallon tank, used to store diesel to heat greenhouses in a garden in Straight Road, Boxted, had been drained but residue fuel left inside caught fire due to the heat of the cutting gear used.
Colchester firefighters were called out at about 11am yesterday.
A brigade spokesman said firefighters used hosereels to put out the fire and cool the storage container.
