Shoplifting groceries because he did not have any money to pay for them left a man with six days in prison.
David Wake, 37, of Penfold Road, Clacton, put meat and cheese in to a bag and tried to leave Lidl in St Osyth Road, Clacton, without paying the £30.33 owed, Colchester Magistrates Court heard.
He admitted Sunday's theft of the groceries.
Kim Kennedy, mitigating, said Wake had previously been recalled to prison, where he had been serving a sentence for arson. When Wake was released, he had lived in bed and breakfasts, where he had problems.
Mr Kennedy suggested a short prison sentence would be the best way to deal with the offence.
