Colchester gained two valuable points after winning this closely-contested match.
They started the better of the two sides, immediately pushing their visitors back with sound rucking and good continuity.
Colchester retained possession well and, after five minutes, a kick forward was chased by wing Ed Merry, who outpaced the defence to dive on the ball for the opening try. James Gee converted.
Colchester's number eight and man-of-the-match James Nunn put in tackle after tackle, and in possession he tirelessly drove forward to create a platform for his team.
The midfield of Sawtell, Cryne and Cochrane defended solidly, and full-back Howson dealt confidently with Maule's kicks.
