Michael Motley, of Braintree, was driving a Sainsbury's VW van on the A120 Coggeshall Road at Little Tey, when it was involved in a collision with a French-registered HGV.
As an investigation was launched into the crash, the seventh road death in Essex this year, police arrested and were today questioning the French trucker on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Firefighters from Colchester and Coggeshall, paramedics, the air ambulance and police were called to the fatal crash at about 2pm yesterday.
An Essex Police spokesman said some witnesses has been spoken to, but he appealed for any others to ring 01206 762512.
