Unattended candles started a blaze at a Colchester home.

Residents returned to their flat in Nunn's Road to discover it filled with smoke. Firefighters were called to the scene and wore breathing apparatus and a hose reel to tackle the blaze.

Sub officer Brian Harper said the occupants left the home on Saturday night with the candles still alight.

They ignited the cushion of a chair which was destroyed. He said 100 per cent smoke damage was caused to the home but nobody was injured.
