A man was knocked unconscious and left with serious head injuries after he was attacked in Dovercourt High Street.
The victim, who is in his 20s but has not been named, has spent the past two nights in Colchester General Hospital being treated following the assault.
Insp Paul Butcher, of Clacton police, said officers were alerted to the incident by a woman, who called in for help for the man. The attack took place outside the Kings Arms pub just before 11pm on Saturday.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack and are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen it take place. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 01255 241312 or 01255 221312.
A 26-year-old man was arrested and questioned by officers following the incident. He has been released on bail. He has not been charged with any offence.
