The three men burst into Lexden Heath post office in London Road, Stanway, and tried to smash their way through a screen which protected staff.
At one point, they held owner Graham Baxter against a counter after he walked in on the raid. But the balaclava-wearing robbers gave up and fled as police, alerted by an alarm, headed to the scene.
Police said the robbers may have driven off in a dark-coloured H-reg Ford Fiesta car which was later abandoned in Peace Road, Stanway.
The men are described as being about 5ft 9ins tall, of medium build, with local accents and were wearing balaclava-style headgear.
Witnesses should call Colchester police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
