Highways bosses have opted for a new dual carriageway between Braintree and the A12, rather than upgrading the existing A120.

Details of the proposals for the £220 million scheme - known as the southern route - will go on show to the public at a series of exhibitions across the area from next Friday.

The Highways Agency's proposal is for a nine-mile (14 kilometre) dual carriageway, diverging from the existing Braintree bypass near Black Notley and cutting across open countryside north of Cressing.

The agency's favoured route then continues across the former Second World War airfield at Rivenhall, crossing the B1024 and River Blackwater between Kelvedon and Coggeshall, and joining the A12 between Feering and Marks Tey.

No estimated completion date has been set for the new road and planning permission has yet to be granted.

Representatives from the Highways Agency will be present at an exhibition on Friday, February 4, from 2pm to 8pm at St Paul's Church, Hay Lane South, Braintree.

They can also be questioned about the other possible routes they investigated and why they were ruled out.
