Rescuers were called out to save a man who had got stuck on the top of 7ft railings.
Firefighters and paramedics were sent to St Julian Grove, Colchester, at 5.45am today when a woman living nearby called 999 after hearing screams.
The man, thought to be in his 40s, was on top of three spikes, with one sticking into his groin area and another in his stomach.
It appeared that he had been climbing into or out of the grounds of the Priory when he got stuck on the railings.
Station officer Paul Ebsworth, of Colchester fire station, said: "When we got there the man was lying across the top of the railings in pain. He didn't appear to be impaled although it was difficult to tell.
"The paramedics decided he hadn't been impaled, he was just trapped on top of the railings, so we used ladders to make a platform and eased him off."
