Caroline Day, 47, of Gosbecks Road, Colchester, said she was "over the moon" that she turned out to be a transplant match for David, 51, who suffers from polycystic kidney disease.
The pair were so delighted a date had been fixed for the transplant of her left kidney that they did not at first realise the date - February 14, the most romantic day of the year.
She said: "It is quite ironic the transplant is scheduled for Valentine's Day as for every other year of our 26-year marriage we haven't even as much swapped cards."
