Major roadworks forcing the closure of the top of Maldon High Street have already taken their toll on trade, according to the town's businesses.
Essex County Council has brought in contractors to replace paving between West Square and Silver Street, leading to the closure of the High Street between its junctions with Market Hill, and Fambridge Road and Spital Road.
Traders feared the works - due to take ten weeks to complete - would impact on their businesses, and claim after just two weeks the closure is already having an effect on custom.
Access on to the High Street from Fambridge Road and Spital Road, and Market Hill, was shut off on Monday, January 17, and will not be re-opened until late March.
A county council spokesman said: "There's always going to be an inconvenience and we can only ask businesses to bear with us while the works are being done."
