A mum has hit out at council chiefs over cutbacks which could see her daughter walk three miles to school.

Maisy Griggs, of Wrabness, could be left without free transport to Wix and Wrabness Primary School. Other children in the village are also believed to be in the same predicament.

Essex County Council said that from 2006, children eight and over who live less than three miles from their school will no longer be allowed to use the bus service.

Maisy is six at the moment, but will be eight when the new rule comes into effect, meaning she will have to find her own way to school.

The news has left her mother, Beverley Griggs, outraged. She said: "Children of that age should not walk to school and not for three miles. It's just bureaucracy gone mad."

A spokesman from Essex County Council said they were aware of the fact that Mrs Griggs disputed the distance. He said: "We have asked the inspector to go back and measure the home to school route on the non-A120 way with a calibrated wheel."
