A widow who claims her husband died after contracting the MRSA superbug has complained about conditions at the hospital.

Margaret Horrocks has complained to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, about the cleanliness of the ward to which her elderly husband, John, was admitted after going in for tests.

She said he went in to have some tests to make sure he was well enough for an operation at St Bartholomew's Hospital, in London, to repair a leaking aorta, the artery leading from the heart.

She said that after he was admitted to Broomfield's ward B12, she was told he had contracted MRSA. Mr Horrocks died at the hospital on October 4.

His widow claims he died from MRSA, although this is not listed on his death certificate.

Mrs Horrocks, of Stanes Road, Braintree, has, however, praised the efforts of staff at Broomfield Hospital for their Clean Your Hands campaign but hopes it will be kept up.

Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust said it could not comment on individual cases due to patient confidentiality.
