Essex residents could face an average rise of £5.85 a year on the policing portion of their council tax bill with higher rises to follow.
And the county council is due to announce its share later today.
The figure, for a band D property, equates to 11p a week and would push up the annual cost from £99 to £104.85 for a typical household.
The 5.9 per cent rise was voted through by members of Essex Police Authority's resource and finance committee at their meeting on Monday. Now it must be ratified at a meeting of the full Police Authority next month.
A spokesman for Essex Police Authority said it was trying to achieve fair council tax rises while also making sure the force delivered good service.
