Tricksters conned a pair of elderly pensioners out of more than £1,600.
Police suspect the same gang were behind two separate artifice burglaries in Colchester yesterday.
In the first raid, at about 3.40pm, a crook called at an elderly man's flat in Buckingham Drive, claiming to be from the water board. Once inside, he kept the man distracted while his two accomplices stole a wallet, containing £160.
About 40 minutes later, at 4.20pm, two men knocked on another elderly victim's door in Harvey Crescent, Stanway. Using the same story to gain entry, they made off with £1,500 cash.
