Colchester's newest night venue could be open in time for Christmas.
The former Odeon cinema in Crouch Street is set to become a "superclub" and the building's owner said he would have early plans for the project in the next two weeks.
Steve Peri will be holding meetings with Colchester Council and the police to discuss his plans for the club, which will be similar to the Mercy club in Norwich, which he owns.
There has been speculation over the future of the building since Mr Peri bought it in 2001. There were reports he was considering opening a casino following Government proposals to reform the gambling laws.
Mr Peri said: "Plans are being drawn this minute and should be ready in the next couple of weeks. It will be a super club.
"I am having a meeting with the council and the police before planning permission goes through to see what's what, and then go from there."
The building will need an extensive refit, but Mr Peri is confident of opening the premises, which will be called Mercy, in time for Christmas.
