Highways bosses have explained why installing a zebra crossing could cost taxpayers up to £22,000.
Witham Town Council had requested a more detailed breakdown of costs to install a crossing in Rickstones Road, Witham, after becoming alarmed at how much contractors' quotes for similar works have risen in recent years.
Essex County Council's highways department has now said £1,000 would be needed for advertising, £5,000 for signs, Belisha beacons and electrical connections, £2,500 for design, £7,000 for installation and roadworks, £1,500 for road markings, and £2,000 for consultation, supervisory and staff costs - a total of £19,000.
County council area highways manager Julie Martin told last night's Witham Town Council planning committee meeting: "The reason why you were given the figure of £22,000 was that it is far better for you that Essex County Council over-estimated rather than under-estimated."
The council voted to proceed with the scheme, despite many councillors having strong misgivings.
