Southend athlete Adam Hickey finished seventh for the Norwich Union Great Britain team in yesterday's cross-country junior international in Portugal.
Hickey, who will line-up for the junior men in the world cross-country championships in France in March, covered the course in a time of 18 mins 38 secs to finish 30 seconds behind the host country winner, Nuno Costa.
The 16-year-old South-end High School pupil was the third Briton home, finishing 13 seconds behind our leading runner, Ryan Stephenson (North Shields), who collected fourth spot.
Despite good bunching from the British men's team they had to settle for runners-up spot behind their hosts after winning overall for the past two years.
Spain were the third country involved.
The British junior women's team emerged victorious. In stark contrast to the freezing weather back home the event in Lisbon was held in hot conditions.
