Residents up in arms over plans to build 49 new homes packed out a town council meeting to discuss the scheme.
The proposed Barratt Eastern Counties development on the East Coast Disposal site off Thorpe Road, Kirby, could include some three-storey houses, while many are three or four-bedroom homes.
Angry campaigners attended the Frinton and Walton Town Council meeting last night to make their views known.
Wendy Simon, of Chapel Lane, Kirby, said: "It is totally out of character of the village environment."
Another resident said: "The present infrastructure will not be able to cope."
Access to the site was also seen as a problem and residents predicted potential for traffic jams.
Councillors discussed an application by the developers to provide five extra parking spaces for the site. They also looked at an application concerning extra details of the development.
John Evans said the development would be turning a village into a town.
Councillors voted to refuse both applications but Tendring Council will have the final say.
