A spate of phone box thefts has seen £53 stolen from a payphone in Shrub End, Colchester.

The thieves removed the cash box of the phone in Shrub End Road at about 10.55pm on Tuesday, said police.

Acting Det Sgt Mike Sheeran, of Colchester CID, said there had been about three or four similar thefts so far this year.

He said: "If anybody sees people acting suspiciously around telephone kiosks around Colchester, we'd appeal for them to come forward."

He said they were especially keen to hear from witnesses who had seen vehicles which may have been involved in cash thefts from payphones.
