The Learn to Care Award at St Luke's Church Primary School, in Church Road, Tiptree, has already received a £2,000 grant from the BT Schools Award scheme and, if the project takes off, it could be in line for the bigger cash reward.
The scheme, starting later this month, involves children from years 5 and 6 attending after-school sessions and doing community work.
The after-school sessions will involve talks from the police and firefighters, and studying for the St John Ambulance Young Lifesaver Award.
