Late night revellers in Southend are about to get help from an unexpected quarter.
Volunteers from local churches will support those in need as street pastors in an experiment set to begin later this year.
Every Friday and Saturday night the street pastors will patrol the areas frequented by Southend party goers and see if they need any help.
The innovative scheme is an initiative of Love Southend, a partnership between all the different churches within Southend borough.
Chairman John Cheek said: "They would be a cross between a Samaritan and a first aider on the street.
"They are to befriend people and help people who are vulnerable. People who might have had too much too drink. They would check if they are all right, if they needed assistance to get home. They might give advice or just a listening ear."
