Fran Walsh, who qualified as a nurse in 1990, is an Essex public health screening co-ordinator employed by Witham, Braintree and Halstead NHS Care Trust at its Witham premises.
She has just received the Queen's Nursing Institute/Maureen Acland Research and Development award.
The £6,000 which comes with the award will enable Fran to develop a structured academic and clinical career pathway for nurses who work in GP surgeries.
Fran, who lives in Chelmsford, said: "Historically, the national picture is one where practice nurses receive less on-going training and undertake fewer academic qualifications than nurses working in other fields. My study aims to establish how this problem can be addressed."
