Manningtree, Mistley and Lawford could link up to fund police community support officers.
Lawford Parish Council is asking the two other councils to join with it to carry out a feasibility study.
Councillors at their meeting last night heard Frinton and Walton Council was already taking part in the scheme, paying towards the cost of six officers.
"Their experience is totally positive with no negatives," said Alan Coley, reporting on a police community support meeting held recently at Weeley.
Stressing there had been a significant reduction in crime in the Manningtree area, Mr Coley said the fear of crime had increased.
