Andre Adams has signed a one-year contract as an overseas player for Essex.
The New Zealander spent the second half of the 2004 season at the County Ground, first as a replacement for Danish Kaneria and then Scott Brant.
All-rounder Adams joins Kaneria as the county's overseas quota for the new season. He said: "I'm looking forward to coming back to Essex after a thoroughly enjoyable few months with the county last year.
"Hopefully I can make a full contribution to turning the club's fortunes around in 2005."
Essex chief executive David East said: "We are very pleased to welcome Andre back to the club, subject to the approval of the New Zealand Cricket Board, which we will be seeking.
"Andre made a great impact last season as a very positive, competitive and dynamic cricketer. We are sure he will bring the same qualities to the team in 2005."
