Tony Clifford feared disaster had struck after he was forced to ask an inexperienced young jockey to take the reins of his three-year-old gelding, Tiger Hunter.
But all was not lost the rank outsider stormed home to the first victory of his short career and left his delighted owner in the money after defying the odds.
Mr Clifford, who owns Blue Tiger Marketing in Maldon High Street, said the unexpected win meant "a couple of thousand pounds", his biggest win since he bought the horse last summer.
