A gardener made a potentially deadly discovery while he was digging - a rusty hand grenade.
The device was discovered about two inches below the ground in the man's garden in Colchester Road, Chappel.
The man raised the alarm by calling police. They alerted the Army, who sent bomb disposal experts in to deal with the grenade on Saturday.
They got permission from a farmer to move it on to an area of open land nearby where it was blown-up in a controlled explosion.
