Thousands of pounds were stolen from a petrol station - after being left in an unlocked drawer.

Police said three days' worth of takings - estimated at £9,000 - were reported stolen from the Total filling station in London Road, Marks Tey.

Colin Stiff, of Colchester police, today appealed for witnesses who may be able to help catch the thief to come forward.

He said: "It would appear the money was in an unlocked drawer and is estimated at £9,000, three days' sales takings.

"If any customers were there and saw anything suspicious, we would appreciate any relevant details."
