Braintree councillors Michael Gage and Jackie Pell joined project manager Barry Mills to launch the start of the work at the fountain in Market Square.
The fountain was cordoned off and dismantled and will be restored. It will be re-installed in the next few months.
The fountain has been a focal point for the town centre since it was donated in 1882 by textile tycoon George Courtauld.
The renovations, which will continue through the spring and into early summer, will see the area remodelled, ushering in a cafe culture with tables and chairs outside restaurants.
