The man walked into Kirby-le-Soken post office just after 11am yesterday and demanded cash.

Molly Gallehawk, who is in her 70s, was behind the counter. But she refused to hand over any money and set off the alarm.

The would-be raider ran off and escaped along Walton Road. Mrs Gallehawk, who lives in Kirby Cross, said the man had come in wearing a black balaclava.

She said: "He dropped a knife but picked it up and held it up against the glass screen in front of the counter.

"I could not believe it, I just thought it was a joke when he said he wanted the cash.

"I pushed the panic button the alarm was making so much noise and he ran out. I was very shocked but not hurt."

Anyone with information should contact Colchester police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
