Gutsy Harwich swimmers battled valiantly to hold their own in an Essex League swimming gala.
The team took on the Killerwhales, Waltham Forest and Harlow in the second-round clash of the league at Fullwell Cross and were outgunned by the bigger clubs, who fielded a number of county and national swimmers.
But what Harwich lacked in depth of strength, they made up for in sheer grit. Swimmers gave their all, some swimming in seven races and many competing several years above their age group.
They battled for every point but as one of the smallest clubs in Essex, Harwich were minnows compared to the mighty Killerwhales who powered to victory with 250 points.
Second place was taken by Harlow with 233 points, leaving Harwich joint third with Waltham Forest on 193.
Harwich did claim some victories. The club's swimmer of the gala was Gemma Wilson, who won the open 100 metres backstroke in one minute and 16.93 seconds and also achieved a personal best in the open 100m freestyle with an impressive time of 1m 05.13.
Lauren Rigg achieved another personal best, recording 36.99s to win the under-13 50m backstroke, and Ashley Buck won the open 100m backstroke in 1m 01.56.
A number of other swimmers also smashed their personal bests as they worked hard to stay in contention.
