Alresford Colne Rangers were looking for points to pull them away from the relegation dogfight that is developing at the base of the premier division of the Kent Blaxill Essex & Suffolk Border League.
They were visited by reigning champions Little Oakley, who have been pacing behind the leaders steadily all season, and realise that if they are to retain their title they must keep winning and hope their rivals slip up.
Unfortunately, it was Oakley who slipped up as Alresford won the match 2-1, and the champions now trail the leaders by nine points and have to win all their games in hand, to close the gap.
At the summit AFC Sudbury Reserves carried on the New Year where they left off in 2004 top of the table and in full flight.
They travelled to Tiptree United Reserves, who made life difficult for the visitors but went down 2-1 to the league leaders. Stanway Rovers Reserves battled with Clacton Town Reserves and triumphed 4-3 to move into second place, as West Bergholt fell to a shock 3-1 defeat at home to a rejuvenated St Osyth.
Mistley United won at Weeley Athletic with Lee Neale scoring in the 89th minute to make the final score 2-1.
