The burglars broke into stables in Sheepcotes Lane, Silver End, on Friday night and stole saddles, bridles, an indoor rug, accessories and grooming kit worth about £2,500.
The stolen tack belonged to Dionne Flack of Rachael Gardens, who had just bought a three-year-old pony for her friend's daughter Jasmine Gilvray to ride.
Jasmine, 11, who lives in Broomfield, has had leukaemia for two years, and was looking forward to getting back to riding as she did before she fell ill.
Mrs Flack, 29, bought Chloe the pony for Jasmine to ride, which she keeps with her other horses Dolly and Lollipop.
