More work is needed before a travel plan which includes charging council workers to park in town is brought in.

Serious disruption has been predicted by union Unison if the plans, which have been approved by Colchester Council's cabinet for a trial, are implemented.

The strategic overview and scrutiny panel reckons there are issues which need looking at. The plan aims to reduce car use, promote public transport, and encourage cycling and walking.

It also includes charging council staff an amount proportionate to their salary to park in the town.

Ian Vipond, head of environmental policy, said the scheme worked as a "carrot and stick" process and the sticks would pay for the carrots.
