Kimberly Fisher's seven-year-old lakeland terrier Atlas, suffered massive abdominal injuries along with bites to his head and hip.
He is being cared for at Colne Valley Veterinary Practice, Maudlyn Road, The Hythe, after major surgery including having 30 per cent of his intestines removed.
American Ms Fisher, 38, who works as a social and economic researcher at Essex University, said she was devastated by what happened.
She said: "I was taking Atlas and another of my dogs, Montgomery, a scottish terrier, for a routine walk along Military Road.
"I turned into Winnock Road to loop back to my house in Barrington Road when I spotted a german shepherd, which was not on a lead, walking with two men.
"Completely out of the blue this dog made an unprovoked lunge at Atlas and Montgomery, who I did have on a lead.
"The two men did pull it off but the damage had been done, there was a lot of blood and Atlas nearly died on the spot."
The incident, which took place at 4.55pm on Saturday, has been reported to the police.
